Mohamed Elneny was named in the Arsenal starting XI in a Premier League match for the first time this season in Saturday’s clash against Burnley. Unai Emery’s much-changed line-up, featuring six changes from the XI that started last Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Southampton, went into the break 1-0 up through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 13th goal in 17 Emirates Stadium matches. It was a goal that owed a huge amount to the ingenuity of Mesut Ozil, who threaded a sensational pass to Sead Kolasinac, who provided the assist for the Arsenal front man. Elneny, who lined up in central midfield with Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka as Emery reverted back to a three-man defence, got a truck-load of criticism for Gooners for his first-half display. Some fans claimed he is not good for Premier League level, with comments including he is a Championship-quality player running around like a “headless chicken”.
