Newcastle United could play a masterstroke in the January transfer window if they sign Wolves attacker Ivan Cavaleiro amid reported interest in the Portugal international.

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies like the look of the 25-year-old winger, who has been in good form at Molineux recently despite not being able to hold down a regular spot in the starting line-up.

Cavaleiro has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals and supplying one assists in the process, which came in the 3-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday.

However out of his 14 outings, he has only started four games in the Premier League, which could mean that Wolves would consider cashing in on him in January as he is hardly key to Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans.

TeamTalk reported in the summer that the former Benfica and Monaco attacker is valued at £16million, and while that is a lot of money for Newcastle, Mike Ashley must see that a player of his quality can provide a major boost to the Tyneside club’s hopes of avoiding relegation this season.

It could be tough to negotiate a deal with the Wanderers but Jorge Mendes, Cavaleiro’s agent, will always try to secure the best deals for his clients and if they are not playing as regularly as they should be in the Premier League, then he could have a major say in where the dazzling winger ends up in the future.

Fulham and Huddersfield were both linked with him last summer after Wolves’ promotion, so there is certainly the capability for him to be on the move in the near future.

Newcastle need to ensure that it’s them who are snapping up Cavaleiro because he is a seriously good attacker who would add goals to a side that is struggling to find the net this season.
