Don Goodman has claimed James Morrison’s tiredness was behind Brentford scoring a late equaliser against West Brom at The Hawthorns on Monday night.

Morrison failed to close down Emiliano Marcondes before his whipped cross was headed home by Lewis Macleod in the 90th minute to seal a 1-1 draw in the Black Country.

Darren Moore only made one substitution all game and Goodman has suggested that the reason Albion failed to see out the win was the tiredness of their long-serving midfielder, who he slammed for his role in the late goal.

“I’m looking at James Morrison here and he comes wide, he’s so tired,” he said during Sky Sports Main Event’s live coverage on Monday night.

“[He’s] treading water and that allows Emiliano to the space. Morrison can’t get out to block the cross and it’s desperate.”

OPINION

Goodman is not exactly the most popular of former West Brom players, but you have to admit that he has a point here. Moore should have taken Morrison off 10 or 20 minutes earlier as it became clear he was struggling to keep up with the game. Dwight Gayle was having to track back into positions that the Scot should have been covering because of his lack of mobility. When Gareth Barry is sat on the bench, there is no excuse to leave fatigued players on the pitch when Brentford were pressing for an equaliser. West Brom should have won the game in the first half though with strikers Hal Robson-Kanu and Jay Rodriguez both missing gilt-edged chances. 5-0 would not have flattered the Baggies at half-time they were that dominant. The Baggies cannot keep clean sheets, which just one all season, so they have to score at least twice to win games.
