Former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam has sent his best wishes to Celtic star Leigh Griffiths on Twitter after Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the striker will be taking an extended break from football.

Sky Sports has quoted Rodgers as saying that Griffiths is taking some time off to sort out some personal issues, admitting that “life is tough” for the 28-year-old at the moment.

Stoke midfielder Adam has taken to his personal Twitter account to send his message of support to Griffiths, who will now more than likely miss a good chunk of the rest of the season.

“Best wishes to Leigh Griffiths,” said Adam on Wednesday evening.

OPINION

It is easy to say it now based on Rodgers’ comments to the press on Wednesday, but has been pretty obvious that something had been bothering Griffiths this season. He has had injury issues and many would have thought that there was some kind of underlying physical issue with the striker, but it now seems that is probably one of the least of his concerns. Hopefully Griffiths can pull through and make a speedy return for the Hoops. He has made 20 appearances across all competitions this season and scored six goals, which is quite a low tally considering how prolific he has been at Parkhead over the years. Rodgers and the Celtic staff will undoubtedly give the forward huge support but in terms of the team, they also need to have a think about signing another striker in January. It was probably on the cards anyway after Moussa Dembele’s exit in the summer, but Odsonne Edouard is now the club’s only available centre-forward, and Rodgers needs back-up option for the Frenchman.
