Rangers faced a must-win game away from home in the Europa League on Thursday night but ended up going down 1-0 in a hugely frustrating night.

Tom English, chief football writer on BBC Scotland, said that Rangers were “giving it a fair old rattle in Vienna in the second-half.”

He added that “Morelos has been excellent”, before tweeting after the goal, “Rangers suckered there. Over and out.”

It was a frustrating night for Rangers who just couldn’t seem to get to grips with the game. Rapid Vienna were there for the taking but chances were few and far between despite Rangers enjoying plenty of possession. Centre-back Connor Goldson had the best chance of the night for Rangers when he crashed a header against the bar in the first-half. Alfredo Morelos was Rangers’ best player and he was a constant menace, but he was on his own for most of the game with no support. Working out how to break teams down like Rapid Vienna is a big issue for manager Steven Gerrard, who doesn’t ever seem to have that much of a plan B. He brought Eros Grezda on for Lassana Coulibaly with about 20 minutes to play and he looked sharp and threatening, and he added Kyle Lafferty towards the end. But ultimately it was too little, too late.
