BBC Sport pundit Michael Brown was gushing over Wolves defender Willy Boly for his performance in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Cardiff on Friday night.

Wolves let slip of a one-goal as the Bluebirds fought back in the second-half to earn all three points against the team they were promoted with last season.

Although it was a dour night for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, Brown believes that the Wanderers did have one major positive and that was the performance of Boly in the first 45 minutes.

“Willy Boly was excellent in the first half. He looks really commanding at the back,” Brown said on BBC Radio 5 live, as quoted on the BBC Sport website.

OPINION

Boly wasn’t that great against Cardiff, so why Brown was drooling over his performance in the first-half in somewhat of a mystery. Boly has struggled in recent games and Conor Coady has had to constantly keep getting him out of trouble. The Frenchman did very well for Wolves last season in the Championship but it’s pretty clear that some players who came up last season are not cut out for the Premier League. Players like Coady and Matt Doherty have stepped up despite being classed as Championship standard for most of their careers, but Boly really hasn’t. Wolves are in a rut right now and players need to start performing throughout the entire 90 minutes if they are going to get the side’s form back. Otherwise the West Midlands club could soon be falling into the relegation battle and everyone knows that if you’re down towards the bottom around Christmas, it is going to be a hard job to try and move away from it. Wolves fans can kiss goodbye to their dream of European football.
