A section of football fans took to Twitter to destroy Dedryck Boyata for his performance as Belgium sank to a shock 5-2 Nations League defeat to Switzerland on Sunday night.
The Celtic centre-back played the full 90 minutes of the clash as his side threw away an early two-goal lead to slump to a barely believable defeat.
Many supporters were critical of the contribution of Boyata, with comments including “abysmal’, ‘hot trash’ and ‘no idea how he made it pro’.

Boyata’s rock-solid performances for Celtic were all forgotten about, or ignored, as he was instantly made one of the social media scapegoats for Belgium’s meltdown at the Swissporarena. There were more holes in the Belgium defence than a Swiss cheese as Xherdan Shaqiri and company had an unexpected field day against the side that finished third in the World Cup and were seen as shoo-ins for the Nations League final four, especially after going two goals ahead after 17 minutes. In the absence of the injured Jan Vertonghen, Boyata was part of a defence that included Premier League icons Vincent Kompany and Toby Alderweireld and, on paper, should have been more than well equipped enough to deal with the best the Swiss had to offer. But Belgium could not cope with the hosts’ onslaught and supporters took to social media en masse to dig out those responsible for one of the shock international results of the year.
