Three Tottenham young stars with first-team experience could quit next year after slipping down the pecking order at the club, according to a reliable journalist.

Football London correspondent Alasdair Gold explained in a Q&A on the site’s live blog (Thursday, 3.20pm) that defender Cameron Carter-Vickers and attacking midfielders Josh Onomah and Marcus Edwards may leave permanently next summer.

Gold explains manager Mauricio Pochettino has held high hopes for all three youngsters but they have been unable to usurp the established order and would need to do big things while on loan to change the manager’s thinking.

OPINION

Pochettino has hailed Carter-Vickers, Onomah and Edwards at various times as outstanding young players with the potential to be major stars at an elite level. But they have struggled to convince the manager they are able to break into his first-team squad after all being given opportunities in the past. They are all at an age now – Carter-Vickers is 20, Onomah is 21 and Edwards is 19 – when they would be expected to develop quickly. The former duo are on loan at Championship clubs and the latter is on loan in the Dutch Eredivisie – but there are major doubts as to whether they can now cut it at Tottenham. There is a sense that the second half of the season will be crucial for all three. If they do not deliver eyecatching performances on loan, they could be given the green light to secure permanent moves away from the Spurs comfort zone and make their way at a lower level or overseas. It could be the making of them.
