David Weir has delivered a ringing endorsement of Allan McGregor as he hailed the Rangers goalkeeper as a “great signing”.

The former Ibrox defender and assistant manager admitted that the summer capture of the 36-year-old has been a huge success after the decision to bring in a replacement for Wes Foderingham surprised many.

“In my time at Rangers I couldn’t fault Wes,” said Weir to the Glasgow Evening Times. “I am sure Allan’s signing would have raised a few eyebrows because they had two good goalkeepers there and were bringing in a third.

“But if you look back now it has been a great signing. Wes has done nothing wrong, I am sure he will be frustrated but on the other hand he will look at Allan and say to himself ‘he isn’t bad, is he?’

“He has shown he is not lost any of the attributes he had in the past and has kept Rangers in a lot of games, especially the European ones with is performances. It is great to see him doing so well because I know what it means to him to play for Rangers. He always makes big saves at big times.”

OPINION

No Rangers summer signing, not even Connor Goldson, has made more of a consistent impact than McGregor, who has totally justified the club’s decision to hand a two-year contract to a 36-year-old and catapult him into the starting XI at the expense of one of the team’s outstanding performers of the previous three seasons. Foderingham has been unfortunate that McGregor has been so good there is no easy or obvious route back into the team, bar for the odd cup run-out. McGregor not only still has the reflexes of his youth, but he has the character and big-match mentality that is critical for a Rangers player. The club have spoken of the need to recruit the right characters, and McGregor fits the bill perfectly. He does not flinch in the Ibrox spotlight, which can be unforgiving. Instead, the experienced campaigner thrives upon it. This could be the season of his life if he can help return the club to winning ways.
