Rangers must attempt to prise Newcastle United striker Joselu away from the Premier League in the January transfer window with Steven Gerrard in need for more attacking reinforcements.

The Gers are in need of more attacking prowess despite having the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty on the books, as this is one side of their game that can let them down at times – and ultimately cost them vital points.

Daniel Candeias has not been at his best, Ryan Kent will be heading back to Liverpool after a season-long loan and Eros Grezda needs to maintain his recent form to show he is worthy of a regular place.

Joselu could be the answer to Rangers’ lack of attacking know-how, and they must swoop for him in January.

The 28-year-old started the first few games of the season for Newcastle in the place of loanee forward Salomon Rondon, but since then, most of his appearances have come from the bench with Rafa Benitez preferring Rondon to lead the line.

That means the Spanish striker will be open to a move away from the Tyneside club in order to seek out more first team opportunities.

His experience in the Premier League would mean he would not struggle getting into Gerrard’s team regularly, and the manager would no doubt appreciate the experience he can bring to the side.

The 6ft 4in [Transfermarkt] ace has made 61 appearances in the top-flight and he was vital in helping United to a tenth placed finish last time out.

Joselu is currently on £40,000-a-week [Spotrac] at St James’ Park, and Rangers would be more than capable of meeting that figure.

United fans may not have been Joselu’s biggest fans and there was usually a groan when his name was spotted on the teamsheet, but there is no doubt that he can add that extra sparkle to a team hoping to quickly bridge the gap on rivals Celtic.

Sky Sports broadcaster Jim White revealed via his personal Twitter account that there is no chance of Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke heading to Rangers – which makes a move for Joselu make even more sense, and Gerrard would surely get pulses racing with his capture.
