Rangers fans will love how Andy Gray reacted to their team’s 7-1 demolition of Motherwell on Sunday.

The high-profile pundit had only a short spell at the Light Blues end the end of his glittering career as a striker in the late 1980s.

But he made clear his affiliation to Rangers and his excitement at how the team are progressing under manager Steven Gerrard following Sunday’s impressive win, which lifted them to third in the table and within two points of leaders Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have totally dominated Scottish football during a run of seven consecutive league titles but Gray is confident the power is beginning to shift in his native Scotland.

His beIN Sports colleague Richard Keys read out the results from Sunday live on television, with Celtic drawing 0-0 against Livingston and Rangers blowing Motherwell away at Ibrox with their startling 7-1 victory.

“Seven,” emphasised clearly pleased Gray as he rubbed his hands together in anticipation and then further reacted to Keys explaining the Scottish table update, in which Celtic are top dogs.

“Not for long. We play them soon. Come on Steven.”

It is understandable Gray is getting excited about Rangers, who are starting to recapture some of their lustre of old.

But they actually play 10 more matches before the second Old Firm of the season, which take place at Ibrox on 29 December in a match that could prove pivotal in the title race.

By that stage, there could be quite a shift in how the table stands.

Rangers have had a brutal schedule in Gerrard’s first campaign following against-the-odds progress in Europe and signs of a team being assembled that can take on all-comers.

Even 60-something former players are getting carried away.
