Celtic legend Davie Provan has urged Rangers manager Steven Gerrard to get out of Ibrox while he can.

The Gers boss has seen his side carelessly lose points in both Europe and domestically in recent weeks, and Provan believes the job is too much for the Liverpool legend.

“I trust Steven Gerrard has the savvy to recognise he’s already on a fool’s errand at Ibrox,” he wrote in the Scottish Sun. “The Rangers job is only going to damage his reputation. The trick for him now is to get out while he’s ahead.

“With the sacking season under way in England, a return south may offer an escape. Early into the job, Gerrard is already under pressure. The circus that greeted his arrival in Govan has left town. He is now under the microscope. By taking the Ibrox job, Gerrard demonstrated the bottle that distinguished him as a player. But there are signs the task is already proving beyond him.”

OPINION

This is a frankly bizarre and misguided take from Provan. Perhaps it’s his Celtic background but he seems to be way out of line with his comments about Gerrard, here. The 38-year-old is only a few months into the job and has overseen a remarkable turnaround both on and off the pitch in Glasgow. Yes, there have been a few dodgy results of late but that’s bound to happen at some point. He is a rookie manager who must be given time to find his feet, not encouraged to leave as soon as things start turning a little sour. There’s been no indication that the job is too big for Gerrard, on the contrary he looks like he belongs in the Ibrox dugout and is relishing the task of guiding the club back to the summit of Scottish football. Provan seems to have some sort of agenda against Rangers or Gerrard personally, and his words come off as ridiculous here. Gerrard should be applauded for the risk he’s taken in taking the Rangers job and credited for the work he has done so far – not encouraged to leave town after a few bad results.
