OPINION

Rangers hitman Alfredo Morelos has earned himself a reputation as something of a hothead during his time at Ibrox – but is that a fair analysis?

Former Gers favourite Richard Gough does not seem to think so, insisting that the officials give him a hard time – especially considering the Colombian forward does not speak great English.

Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: “knowing that he doesn’t speak the language too well, knowing that he is quite combustible then yeah I’d definitely be niggling at him and trying to provoke a reaction.

“It’s the dark arts of defending but the referees have got to realise that and give Alfredo a bit more protection.Teams are targeting him. Absolutely.

“It’s not like he’s chatting back, it’s just the way he’s protesting with his arms out in the way South Americans do. There’s a frustration about the boy and I think the officials need to give him a break.”

Sorry, but has Gough forgotten what makes the Scottish top flight one of the most competitive – below the likes of Celtic, that is – physically demanding and all round entertaining to watch, or even what it is to be a footballer?

Defenders are obviously going to try and get a reaction out of Morelos – as anyone would to anyone else to try and gain that competitive advantage – but why on earth should the Colombian be given any protection?

It is up to the player to manage his temper and learning how to do that will make him a better and more well rounded talent for the Light Blues, while keeping that ruthless streak which makes him such a danger to defences.

Not only is Gough living in a dreamland when it comes to Morelos and his treatment – which is no different to what he can expect in any other division – but the Gers must actively ignore him and continue to let the young forward learn where the line is.

A cool demeanour on the outside with an aggressive streak used purely for scoring goals would take him to the next level – it is up to Steven Gerrard and the Ibrox staff to help him learn that.
