Steven Gerrard took the mic when Rangers were accused of treating Lee Wallace badly at the AGM at the Armadillo on Tuesday morning.

The former captain has only played one minute of football this season under Steven Gerrard, after a dispute with the club last year almost ended his Rangers career.

A fan stood up at the AGM and asked about the player’s situation, saying that he thought the club had treated him terribly.

Gerrard replied and said that although he was still part of his plans, he had “better options” in his position.

As quoted in the Daily Record he said, “Lee Wallace was out injured when I came in and had missed 12 months before then.

“I pay tribute to how Lee has gone about his business when he has been injured.

“To be candid, as long as he’s here he remains part of my plans and he trains with us but I believe we have better options in that position at the moment. My relationship with Lee is fine.”

OPINION

This was what you’d call damning with faint praise. Gerrard paid tribute to how Wallace has dealt with injury but to say he’s got better options at left-back is a bit of a kick where it hurts. They’ve really struggled there this season after Borna Barisic was injured. Jon Flanagan has been tried there but without much success and the former Liverpool right-back is usually found on the bench now. Andy Halliday has been drafted back into the left-back position and has done a decent job, while Barisic is closing in on a return, but plenty of Rangers fans would have liked to see Wallace given another chance. As it is, it appears that his career at Ibrox is over. He’s out of contract in the summer and can talk to overseas clubs about a pre-contract as early as January. It’s a shame that his Rangers career will be remembered more for this than for anything else he’s achieved at the club.
