Three things learned from Celtic v Hearts

|

OPINION

Celtic continued their fine recent run of form with a 5-0 victory over table-topping Heart of Midlothian on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers’s side were terrific from the get go as they blew away Craig Levein’s team at Parkhead. A brace from Odsonne Edouard and strikes from Filip Benkovic, James Forrest and Ryan Christie from the penalty spot secured victory.

This was one of the finest performance of the Hoops’s season, as they showed their class with a thumping win over the table-topping Jambos.

As usual there is plenty to be gleaned from the game, andĀ This is FutbolĀ has identified three things to be learned from Celtic’s blitzing of Hearts.

Celtic must cash in on Boyata in January

Dedryck Boyata wasn’t terrible against Hearts but it wasn’t his greatest afternoon in a green and white shirt either.

The 6ft 2in Belgian [Source: Transfermarkt] looked assured for the most part but did have a couple of dodgy moments, particularly when he almost gifted Steven MacLean a goal with a sloppy back pass.

The club should look to move him on in January while they can still make a decent amount of money for him. They have Jozo Simunovic, Filip Benkovic, Kristoffer Ajer and Jack Hendry at the club; they’ll be fine without him.

Rogic the main man in midfield

25-year-old Tom Rogic produced another sumptuous performance in the centre of the Hoops midfield, and he’s formed a nice partnership with Callum McGregor of late.

The Australian has been key in helping McGregor adjust to his deeper role, and he looked terrific once again against Levein’s team.

When he’s fit he is such an important player in this Celtic team, and he gave another reminder of his quality on Saturday.

Early season struggles over

Celtic were extremely poor by their high standards in the early stages of this season and, while their European form hasn’t got any better, Rodgers’s team look to be back to their best in the domestic game.

They’ve won their last three games in all competitions by a combined 13-0, blowing away Hearts twice while destroying Dundee in mid week.

The team are hitting form at the right time and are now just two points behind Hearts at the top of the table – it’s unlikely they’ll be stuck in second for long.
