Celtic are preparing to offer long-serving star Mikael Lustig a contract extension in crucial talks next week, according to Fotboll Direkt.

The Swedish outlet claim that the Hoops are set to make a decision on the 32-year-old’s future, with AIK having contacted the right-back about a potential move back home.

Fotboll Direkt report that sources believe Celtic are ready to take up an option to extend the 6’2″ ace’s contract, which is set to expire in the summer [Transfermarkt].

OPINION

Lustig’s future has been a big talking point at Parkhead in recent weeks, with the long-serving defender approaching the end of his second contract with the club. When his current deal runs out in the summer Lustig will have spent seven years in Glasgow, and will go down as a significant player in a hugely successful period in the club’s history. There are those among the Celtic faithful who would be happy for the club to extend that stay into an eighth year, with Lustig still being a regular for Brendan Rodgers this season. However, there is likely to be a bigger group ready to see the Sweden international walk away, with Lustig having become a victim of some heavy criticism in recent seasons. A return to Sweden with AIK is most certainly on the cards, with Lustig said to have admitted such a move does appeal, but should Celtic offer him an extension he would surely take it. It will be interesting to see what happens in these reported talks, and the reaction afterwards will also be most intriguing.
