Former Celtic player Mark Fotheringham has claimed that Hoops midfielder Callum McGregor is good enough to play for Bayern Munich.

The Scotland international, 25, has excelled in a deeper role in Scott Brown’s absence in recent weeks, and Fotheringham feels he can go to the highest level of the game.

“Callum’s an outstanding talent,” he told the Scottish Sun. “I believe he would be perfect for the Bundesliga because he’s such a talented, technical player. Callum’s the one player in the Celtic squad who could play for Bayern Munich — I honestly rate him that highly.

“There will be a lot of top German clubs watching him against Leipzig. Nothing about Callum’s future would surprise me. I think he’s got a massive move in him, to a club like Bayern or one of the English Premiership teams. I played with Paddy Roberts and Moussa Dembele at Fulham before they became big Celtic heroes. Callum’s every bit as good, if not better than them.”

OPINION

This is quite a clam from Fotheringham. McGregor has looked brilliant since transitioning to this deeper midfield role, suggesting that he could be the long term replacement for Brown at the club. He’s an excellent talent who is only going to get better as the years go by. To say he’s good enough to play for a European giant like Bayern Munich seems like a bit of a stretch, however. Even the most ardent Celtic supporter must admit that it’s unlikely any of their players would get anywhere near Niko Kovac’s squad. That’s no disrespect to any of the players, it’s just that teams like Bayern operate on a different stratosphere to Celitc. To say that McGregor is better than both Roberts and Dembele is another big shout from Fotheringham, but he appears to rate the midfielder extremely highly. Certainly McGregor has been a more consistent operator for his club than either of those two men, and Bhoys fans will be hoping that he doesn’t make the big move away from Parkhead that Fotheringham is predicting.
