Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers did not enjoy the best of transfer windows over the summer and with the January window just around the corner he will no doubt be hoping to improve his side significantly in 2019.

The Bhoys might have brought in Odsonne Edouard for a record fee but they also lost Moussa Dembele, and the rest of the new recruits have been hit and miss so far – hence the need for more signings.

One man that the Hoops have been linked with is Wigan Athletic attacking midfielder Nick Powell, with the Sun having claimed that the Scottish giants would be willing to offer the 24-year-old a much improved contract from his £19,000-a-week (£1million-per-year) at the Championship side.

Having netted four goals and chipped in with five assists, it is understandable that the Latics would be reluctant to let him leave – but Celtic have been handed a huge boost in their hopes of snapping him up as it is claimed that Wigan are already looking for someone to replace him with.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon states that the second tier side are keen on Everton’s Kieran Dowell to fill the void left by Powell’s potential departure, and it seems that they are resigned to losing their star man.

That plays perfectly into Celtic’s hands, and with January approaching fast they will be hoping that the Latics ramp up their hunt for Dowell or anyone else in order to lessen the impact of Powell’s departure.

The ball seems to be rolling on the midfield maestro leaving the Championship outfit – and now Celtic just need to make sure Glasgow is his next destination.
