Celtic are expected to revive their interest in Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna once the January transfer window opens, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Dons refused to sell the Scotland international in the summer, but that Brendan Rodgers will likely go back in for the powerhouse centre back in January.

The Mail’s report also states that Fulham will make another bid for Hoops defender Dedryck Boyata in January, precipitating the club’s renewed interest in McKenna.

It is said that Celtic will be in the market for a striker and a right back to add to the centre back signing in January, but that they won’t make a move for Swansea City’s Connor Roberts following scouting reports on the player.

Good move for Celtic?

Obviously if Boyata leaves then the Bhoys will need to bring in another centre back. McKenna seems about as good a replacement for the big Belgian as anyone. He has significant experience of playing in the Scottish Premiership and has excelled in recent years for Derek McInnes’ side. At 22 years of age he is young enough to improve in the coming years and he would fit Celtic’s recent strategy of pilfering the SPL’s finest talents. McKenna is a solid centre half who has made huge strides in recent seasons and would likely be a good addition for the club. The Boyata situation needs to be sorted first, but if he does leave as expected then McKenna is a fine candidate to replace him.

Likely to happen?

If Celtic want to bring McKenna in then he will likely move to Parkhead – as long as the club make their move for him in a more timely manner this time. The player would surely fancy the switch and it sounds as if Celtic are keen on him, so why not?
