BBC Sport pundit Alex Rae was blown away by the performance of Allan McGregor in Rangers’ 0-0 draw with Villarreal at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Steven Gerrard’s side managed to keep alive their hopes of reaching the Europa League knock-out stages with an impressive point against the Spanish club, even though they played a lot of the match with 10 men after Daniel Candeias’ controversial sending off in the first-half.

McGregor’s performances in goal have been a real highlight of Rangers’ European campaign this season and ex-Ger Rae was thrilled with how well the goalkeeper played once again on Thursday.

“Magnificent point for Rangers. McGregor sensational. Desire, fight, togetherness from the players,” said Rae via his personal Twitter account after the game.

OPINION

Seriously, how good has McGregor been for Rangers this season? Did anyone really think he would be this good? There were some fans debating over whether it would be him of Wes Foderingham who would be Gerrard’s number one this season, but looking back, that debate was just silly. McGregor has probably been the most in-form goalkeeper in the whole of the United Kingdom this term. Without him Rangers would be much lower in the Scottish Premiership table, would have been humiliated by Celtic in September and would probably be already out of the Europa League before the final group game. McGregor’s performances for Scotland have also been amazing. The 36-year-old has shown no signs of getting worse and he could easily be Rangers’ number one goalkeeper well into his 40s. Foderingham may as well quit Ibrox in January because there is no way he is ever going to play in any big games while he is in the shadow of McGregor.
