A number of West Ham supporters have taken to social media to slaughter the performance of Angelo Ogbonna in the club’s 3-1 defeat at home to Tottenham on Wednesday night.

The Hammers players host to their London rivals in the League Cup round of 16, but were comfortably beaten by Mauricio Pochettino’s men as a brace from Heung-min Son and another from Fernando Llorente sealed victory, Lucas Perez netting for the Irons.

The West Ham fans were left savaging the defensive display of 6’3″ giant (source: Transfermarkt) Ogbonna, with many stating that the 30-year-old should be nowhere near the first team again.

COMMENTARY

Ogbonna has not been used much by Manuel Pellegrini and based on this outing it is clear to see why. The supporters were all left bemoaning his lack of pace and mobility and when you compare his performance to how the likes of Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop play, bringing him into the side was like going from a Ferrari to a horse and cart. He has the height and strength to dominate forwards but even then he struggled to keep the visitors quiet, finding himself beaten both in open play and from set pieces. He makes an adequate backup option but this display made it clear that the 30-year-old has no future in the starting XI, and as one fan said, perhaps selling him in the January window would be the best thing for all parties. Having been such a loyal servant to the club, it is sad to see how far he has fallen, but at the same time the Irons are looking to develop themselves, and Ogbonna does not fit into those plans.
