Stuart Pearce has delivered some words of advice for West Ham star Declan Rice on his international future while raving about the ‘very big talent.’

Rice has played three times for the Republic of Ireland in friendlies but has now been propositioned by England amid his brilliant form for the Hammers.

Pearce has now advised Rice to go with his heart in making the decision, while also waxing lyrical about the 19-year-old after his breakthrough to become a first-team regular.

Speaking to the Mirror, he said: “It’s totally down to him, wherever his heart lies. But I do think more clarity is needed on the international stage. I don’t think players should be able to change allegiance after declaring for a nation at any level.

“He’s a very big talent. I’m pleased with the way he has fought his way back into the side. It was a pleasure to work with him. He is one of those players who will continually improve himself.”

OPINION

It is a surprise that Rice has still not announced his decision on his international future, with the youngster having been deciding for several months now. Obviously it is a big decision, but surely after so long there is only one option? If he goes back to play for Ireland now he may be welcomed back by Martin O’Neill and the coaching staff but it is unlikely many of his teammates or fans will be happy to have him back. Rice looked certain that he wanted to play for Ireland when he first broke onto the scene for West Ham, so for him to turn around and consider England is a bit of a kick in the teeth. Anyhow, playing for England is the clear decision for him in footballing terms, with Rice easily having the ability to play for the Three Lions, especially considering their lack of options in central midfield at the moment.
