Manchester United have declared their interest in West Ham United player Declan Rice, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper reports on its website that United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in a centre-back in the next transfer window, and has identified Hammers fan favourite Rice has the player to fulfil that aim.

The £15million-rated star is in an ongoing contract stand-off with the Irons, having rejected an improved offer of £20,000-a-week.

The 19-year-old has also been linked to the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund – but it is the Red Devils who hold the strongest interest.

Good move for West Ham?

It would absolutely and definitely not be a good move for the Hammers. Rice has been a revelation as a holding midfielder so far this season, and the club would be mad to let go of him when he is at his best. They need to reject any offers that come their way for the young ace, as he is only going to get better and better with age – and they need to make the most of that while they can.

Likely to happen?

United have only registered their interest at this stage, and have not actually declared that they want to sign Rice in the January transfer window – so a move is not likely at the moment. It will become increasingly unlikely when the window opens as well, as West Ham are no doubt going to stand firm when it comes to offers for one of their star players. However, it remains to be seen just how firm they will stand if Manchester United come in with a very tempting bid.
