Tottenham are set to swoop for Boca Juniors midfield enforcer Wilmar Barrios if the price is right, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Speaking to fans about the Lilywhites’ transfer business and who they might target moving forward, the Sun reporter named the Colombian international on his personal Twitter account as one the club would look to sign on the condition the asking price from his current side was acceptable.

Barrios, 25, has picked up 14 caps for his country while the defensive midfielder has struggled to pick up game time for his club this season, managing to make only five appearances from a possible 13.

Good move for Tottenham?

Barrios was linked with Spurs over the summer – a move which obviously never came to fruition – and it seems as though their interest has not waned heading into the new year.

With the likes of Mousa Dembele set to leave the club, the Belgian’s contract expiring next summer and no new deal on the horizon, and Victor Wanyama struggling to make the desired impact, a new midfielder with a focus on winning the ball back should be a priority for the Lilywhites.

Currently playing in Argentina, you just know that manager Mauricio Pochettino has had his contacts in his home country on the case and will have received a detailed dossier on the Boca Juniors man.

If Pochettino thinks he is the right man for Tottenham then Daniel Levy best open his chequebook and get a deal done.

Likely to happen?

It all depends on what sort of price the Argentine side are looking for.

It is unlikely they will be able to demand the same sort of money a European side would, although a higher fee helps Spurs in terms of getting a work permit for his capture.

If Pochettino really wants him then Tottenham will do all they can to get it across the line but interest from elsewhere could scupper their plans.

One to watch, that is for sure.
