Tottenham left it late to save their Champions League blushes at Wembley on Tuesday night.
After going a goal down to PSV, Tottenham huffed and puffed but couldn’t blow the Dutch side away, until Harry Kane stepped up with two vital goals.
He got a lot of the plaudits but many Tottenham fans were blown away by Davinson Sanchez, the powerhouse centre-back who was also employed as a makeshift striker before Fernando Llorente was introduced in the 75th minute.
COMMENTARY
Sanchez has stepped up for Tottenham after the injury to Jan Vertonghen and he showed what a signing he could be with his performance last night. The 22-year-old cost £36million when he signed from Ajax in the summer of 2017 and has made 55 appearances across all competitions since. He played 90 minutes straight in each of the four games since Vertonghen was injured, but was dropped in favour of Juan Foyth for the 3-2 win against Wolves. Foyth almost threw the game away though, conceding two penalties, and we imagine that Sanchez will be back for the game against Crystal Palace on Saturday despite his exertions last night. Tottenham fans were hugely appreciative. One fan hailed his signing and said that he would be Tottenham captain one day. Another said he loves him because he “will leave it all out there”, while another loved the fact that he was even employed as a striker in last night’s game.
Here are the best reactions from Spurs fans:
So bloody love Davidson Sanchez. People forget (because he slipped in so seamlessly last season) he is 22. He’s top. Like Lamela, he also gets it. Will leave it all out there. Loved seeing him pushing the PSV players off the pitch ?? #THFC #COYS

That Icardi equaliser has effectively knocked us out but at least we did our job in the end tonight. Kane will get the headlines again but Gazzaniga, Winks and Sanchez all excellent to keep the slim hopes alive #COYS

Gritty performance and still in it! Kane was heroic, Sanchez was rock solid, and Gazzaniga was excellent yet again! #COYS #thfc https://t.co/etWu1R5iik

Thought Sanchez, Lucas & Winks were superb tonight. Lamela & Llorente both making an impact when they came on. I don’t think Aurier solves our current problem at right back. Would like to see KWP get some minutes. A left back must be bought in January, Davies not up to it. #THFC

Masterclass by this man @daosanchez26 tonight. Showed real leadership qualities and will one day captain us. What a signing he’s proved to be. pic.twitter.com/7UfcT3a1xy

I was confident we would turn this around after going 1-0 after just 2 minutes, just a matter of time before we found the net, a Harry Kane brace keeps our Champions league journey alive, M.O.M for me, the brilliant Lucas Moura followed by Davinson Sanchez, Coys pic.twitter.com/TcPT8kb19p

Fantastic again, playing with Jan and Toby has made him into a top centre-back ?
