Tottenham supremo Daniel Levy has made a statement after it was confirmed that Premier League executive Richard Scudamore would receive a £5million ‘golden handshakes’ payment.

The incident has been growing in controversy as it was announced that all Premier League clubs were asked to donate £250,000 for the farewell gift.

Scudamore will apparently stay in as a ‘consultant’ for three years, although the payment was never said to be for services.

BBC journalist Dan Roan asked Levy for a statement after he left a Premier League meeting and he appeared nonplussed about the rift between the football world and the rest of the country.

“He has unique knowledge and experience that is going to be ongoing and of benefit to the Premier League for the next three years,” Levy said.

“It’s an absolutely fair payment. It was for the Premier League to make a decision… All the clubs are behind it.”

OPINION
Football fans and many pundits alike are disgusted that the money is going to an already wealthy man when the grassroots game is crying out for cash. Just think what £5million could do for young players who often have terrible facilities? Fans will not like what Levy had to say here – better that he just said it was a Premier League decision and leave it like that. He’s notoriously tight when it comes to transfers at his club, but can obviously find a big pot of money for such an important cause. Some clubs reportedly refused to pay the £250,000 but we’ve had no official confirmation of that, although we hope it’s true. Tottenham are definitely not among them though and we think it’s a shame in today’s world that such an obvious disconnect exists. Wealth begets wealth, but there was no need for this. You can expect there to be more fallout over this.
