Tottenham legend Ledley King has singled out current Spurs star Erik Lamela for a rave review while unveiling an astonishing statistic about his recent form.

The Argentine attacker has reestablished himself as a regular for Mauricio Pochettino in the starting XI with three consecutive starts in the Premier League, having previously been used as a substitute in the English top flight and a starter in the cup competitions.

He scored his sixth goal of the season in the 3-2 win over Wolves on Saturday and it led to King raving over the 26-year-old with the amazing stat that he has scored or assisted a goal at a rate of just under one a game in his last 12 outings, which stretches back to the final game of last season.

He wrote in his Seven of the best column: “Lamela was the star of the show (v Wolves), and after a 13-month injury layoff which was a testing time both physically and mentally, Lamela has now contributed to 11 goals in 12 appearances and looks to be close to his best form.

Opinion

Anyone who had not been paying much attention would have completely missed out on the sort of impact that Lamela has had on the Lilywhites over the last couple of months – but it appears not to have escaped King’s eye. It begs the question as to why it has taken so long for him to get back into the starting XI on a regular basis, although his spate of injury problems over the last year or two might have something to do with that. As King says, the Argentine is finally looking somewhere near his best and it has been a long time coming for Tottenham fans, who would have no doubt been getting frustrated over a man of his talents failing to hit the expected heights. That cannot be said any more, and if he continues to contribute with such amazing regularity then he will have exceeded the expectations set on his shoulders. There have been some Spurs players who have been frustrated this season and so they will be glad to see Lamela shining as brightly as he has.
