Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan are both weighing up a move for Tottenham midfielder Moussa Dembele upon the expiry of his current contract, according to Calciomercato.

The Belgian star has to yet put pen to paper in north London, placing both Serie A clubs on high alert. It is also believed that the 31-year-old has garnered interest from elsewhere in Europe and China.

Further reports from Calciomercato suggest that Dembele is looking to secure a contract worth in excess of £6 million a year, far exceeding the £4.5 million he is currently paid by Spurs.

So far Dembele has rejected every contract offer made to him by Tottenham, seemingly reaffirming his desire to leave Mauricio Pochettino’s side at the end of the season.

Opinion

Dembele has consistently been one of the most underrated and integral components of Spurs’ transformation under Pochettino. The Belgian is a popular figure who seemingly has the unanimous adoration and respect of his teammates. Once upon a time his strength and efficiency in the heart of midfield made him an indispensable part of any Tottenham side. In recent times, however, he has been blighted by injury, and at the age of 31, the fear will be that his best years are behind him. From Spurs’ point of view it may be time to bid farewell to the midfielder in favour of younger players who represent longer term options for the club. For Dembele, a move to Italy could be ideal. Renowned for being slower and less physical than the Premier League, his natural attributes would undoubtedly shine if he were able to remain injury free. Worryingly for Spurs fans, however, should they lose Dembele to a member the European elite for financial reasons it could well act as another damning indictment of Daniel Levy’s infamous salary cap.
