A number of supporters who were watching England’s clash against Croatia on Sunday afternoon were left slaughtering the performance of Tottenham’s Harry Kane on social media.

The Spurs man was once again chosen to lead the line in their crucial Nations League tie against the side who defeated them in the World Cup semi-finals, but was unable to capitalise on a number of chances created by his teammates as the Three Lions went into half time at 0-0 at Wembley.

Having fallen 1-0 down, Gareth Southgate’s men managed to turn it around and seal a 2-1 win, Kane netting a winner in the final 10 minutes of the clash.

However, the striker’s performance had international supporters tearing their hair out on Twitter, with some even suggesting that Callum Wilson, who made his England debut against the USA, should have been chosen ahead of Kane.

COMMENTARY

Strikers are entitled to a bad day at the office but England would have been expecting so much more from their main man against Croatia – even if he did net the winner. His hold up play was alright and he did manage to bring his teammates into the game at times with some fine passes but it is his finishing where he is judged and that let him down on Sunday. He did not look like the imperious hitman that Tottenham or England fans have come to expect to see, as he seemingly lacked the strength to compete with the away side’s defenders. Perhaps some of the reactions on social media have been a little harsh – his match winning performance was by no means a travesty – but there was plenty lacking which needed to be improved upon. Tottenham fans will be hoping he can get back into his groove for the return to Premier League action next weekend – otherwise they could struggle.
