A section of football fans have ripped into Moussa Sissoko on Twitter for conceding a penalty on his return to the France team.

The Tottenham midfielder was recalled by national team boss Didier Deschamps following some fine recent club performances and was a second-half substitute for France in their 2-0 Nations League defeat to Holland on Friday night.

Many international and Spurs supporters highlighted how he lost the ball and clumsily gave away a late penalty that was converted by Memphis Depay.

COMMENTARY:

Spurs fans wouldn’t know whether to laugh or cry watching Sissoko give away that late penalty with a mixture of clumsiness, poor technique and panic. Certainly, France and other international fans were far from happy, even though the World Cup winners were already 1-0 down at that stage and staring down the barrel of a defeat that ended their 15-match unbeaten run. Sissoko was recalled to the national squad after missing the World Cup following a wretched 2017-18 campaign that seemed to signal the end of his Spurs days. But the midfielder remained in north London and, after spending the opening months of the season on the fringes, has seized his opportunity since being recalled following injuries to Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier, not to mention niggling problems for Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen over the last month or two. Tottenham supporters will just hope that Sissoko’s bungled challenge does not affect his confidence ahead of his return to his club.
