Newcastle have the money for one big deal in the January transfer window, according to the Sun’s transfer expert Alan Nixon.

He made the claim on his personal Twitter account on Thursday, after being asked about the possibility of them signing attacker Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United.

He said that there was money for “one decent player” and that other recruits could come from the foreign loan market.

Asked about Almiron, who Newcastle have been linked heavily with, Nixon said that it was “significant” that the agent came to St James’ Park to watch a recent Premier League game but said there was still a fair amount of work to do.

OPINION

Good and bad news for Newcastle fans. They’ve been lifted out of the relegation zone with excellent back-to-back wins but fans will think the squad still needs significant improvement in January if they’re going to avoid a relegation dogfight. The good news is that the money is there for one decent player. We imagine that could be £16-£20million and that could be enough to land Almiron if a bidding war doesn’t erupt for the player. That could happen though after his spectacular start to the season that’s seen him involved in 25 goals from just 32 games. However, that sounds like it would be it for Newcastle. Foreign loans are always a gamble but especially in January. Coming in partway through the season without any experience of the Premier League is a recipe for disaster in a lot of cases and they’d surely be looking to add depth here rather than regular starters. Still, for Newcastle fans the idea of having money for a decent player might be one they can cling to. It’s a step in the right direction.
