Derek Johnstone was blown away by Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor’s performance in Scotland’s 3-2 win against Israel earlier this week.

Alex McLeish’s side, despite nine withdrawals, managed to finish top of their Nations League group thanks to a thrilling win over Israel.

And if it wasn’t for a superb piece of goalkeeper by McGregor in the final stages of the showdown, the Tartan Army could easily have missed out on promotion as the Rangers shot-stopper continued his fine run of form between the sticks.

“You can’t overlook the importance of the save that Allan McGregor made at the end of the game,” Johnstone said on the Glasgow Evening Times website.

“He had no chance with either of the Israel goals but it was an outstanding stop that won Scotland the match because there would have been no way back.

“He stood his ground and his reactions were sensational, as they have been all season.”

OPINION

Everyone knew that McGregor was going to be a great signing for Rangers in the summer, but did anyone seriously think that he would be this good? There was some talk about whether he or Wes Foderingham would be Steven Gerrard’s number one goalkeeper at Ibrox, but to have that conversation now would see you sent to the doctors because McGregor is one of the in-form goalkeepers not only in Scotland, but in the whole of the United Kingdom. A lot of people from down south will scowl at that claim, but it’s true. McGregor has been Rangers’ best player this season. He has put in fantastic performances in the Scottish Premiership, in the Europa League and at international level with Scotland. Even when Rangers lose he still plays well. Hopefully the Gers can get one or two more years out of the ex-Hull ‘keeper because he is doing a fantastic job right now.
