Everyone knows that Newcastle United are in need of some reinforcements in January, and targeting a proven goal scorer should be a priority.

One player United boss Rafa Benitez must look to is Watford’s forward Troy Deeney, who would slot in perfectly at St James’ Park.

According to the Northern Echo, the Spaniard is hoping to break the club’s transfer record, despite not yet knowing what funds he will have available in January.

Capturing Deeney will no doubt require breaking the bank for Newcastle, and the fact Benitez is as optimistic as he is implies that that the club will have the money to convince the Hornets to part ways with one of their star players.

Deeney may have only netted two goals in eight appearances this season, but his attacking threat is constant and he always manages to get himself in dangerous positions.

He has proved time and time again that he is an experienced goal scorer, and that is just the type of striker Newcastle need come January.

The Magpies have not broken their transfer record yet, but there is no doubt that the 30-year-old powerhouse will be worth every penny if he makes the move to Tyneside.

The hitman would thrive at the club if the service given to him is top-notch, and there is no doubt that  Newcastle’s creative players can provide him chance after chance.

Deeney is the player who is more than capable of turning those chances home – and seeming as he has scored 30 Premier League goals in his career, Benitez would be mad not to swoop for him.

He must be one of their main transfer targets come January – and the manager would pull off an absolute blinder if he was to acquire Deeney’s services.
