Andrew Cole hailed Newcastle United striker Salomon Rondon on Twitter for his performance in the team’s 2-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Venezuela international scored both Newcastle goals as he opened his Premier League tally for the club he joined on loan in the summer.

OPINION

As Rafael Benitez pointed out afterwards, Rondon is not fast or capable of blowing defences away with his speed. But he is strong and able to lead an attack at Premier League level. Many have questioned why Newcastle swapped a natural goalscorer in Dwight Gayle in the summer window for a forward with an inferior scoring record. Rondon provided his most emphatic answer yet on Saturday as he steered the north-east giants to a second consecutive league victory. It was the first occasions that the 69-times international had scored for Newcastle in the competition and demonstrated why Benitez has so much faith in him. Supporters will hope the double can given Rondon the confidence to make a real mark this season and show why the club should look to convert his season-long loan into a permanent transfer at the end of the season. A thumbs-up from the 12th highest Premier League scorer ever in Cole will also appreciated by Rondon and do his confidence the power of good.
