Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback will not be offered a new contract by the club and is set to quit permanently, according to the Chronicle’s live blog[10:28].

The newspaper claims that the the current deal of the Nottingham Forest loanee, 29, is up at the end of the season and he will not be offered an extension.

Forest manager Aitor Karanka is said to be eager to bring Colback in permanently once his Newcastle deal expires.

The Newcastle-born midfielder spent the second half of last season at the City Ground, and linked up with the club once again this summer for a season-long loan.

OPINION

This news feels inevitable, you have to say. Colback clearly has no future on Tyneside, with Rafael Benitez simply not appearing to rate him very highly. He’s found a good situation for himself at Forest, where he is an integral part of what Karanka is building there. At 29 years of age he is older than you think, and isn’t the young star he was when he joined the Magpies. His Newcastle career hasn’t gone the way anyone expected and it looks like it’ll come to a sad end this summer. Colback is a decent player but he’s never been top class and isn’t going to get significantly better at this stage of his career. Central midfield isn’t a strength for Newcastle and yet Benitez still has no need for Colback, which tells you all you need to know about the state of his Magpies career. Better for all involved for him to move on at the end of the season.
