Newcastle United’s suspended coach Peter Beardsley is not expected to return to the club and will leave after allegations of discriminatory comments while part of the under-23 setup at St James’ Park, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim that the former England star is still contracted to the Magpies nearly a year after the controversy was revealed, with an investigation said to still be taking place.

The report states that Beardsley is helping coach at nearby Gateshead on a non-contract basis but that his future with Newcastle looks bleak and that he is set to leave the club without returning to his previous role.

Opinion

The allegations made over Beardsley was another unwanted piece of controversy the Magpies had to deal with in 2017, with things like the takeover and the HMRC investigation further adding to the stresses on the shoulders of the Magpies’ top brass. While a legend at St James’ Park, Beardsley’s coaching record was nothing special, having failed to see many youth and reserve players make that step up to the senior side and perhaps a change behind the scenes is best for the club. It would be a seriously sad way to end his career on Tyneside but the controversy surrounding him looks to have seriously tainted his reputation. It might be best if he gets out now, tearing up his contract with the club and keeping what dignity he has left. It is about time he puts his feet up after a glittering football career – although it seems he wants to keep coaching for as long as he can.
