Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has sanctioned funds for the January transfer window, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on its website that the Sports Direct tycoon has green-lighted the cash needed to fund the transfer activity of United – however, he is said to be rather frustrated at the fact that Newcastle keep being associated with new owners.

The Magpies are yet to receive an offer for the club that they find adequate, but the report adds that a ‘price package’ is set in stone for any interest party.

OPINION

The news that Mike Ashley has sanctioned funds for the January transfer window will no doubt be music to the ears of Newcastle fans. However, they are not going to be won over just because Ashley is taking more of an interest in the players and the club itself. If Ashley remains as owner, it is going to take them a long time to place trust in him after everything that has gone on over the past several years. Yes, it is good that he wants to be a more hands-on owner by attending more matches, but this is something that he should have done a long time ago. It shows that things are heading in the right direction, but those things will no doubt take time and effort. Newcastle will not be transformed overnight – it is a work in progress, and Ashley must begin with a successful transfer window in January.
