Danny Murphy has claimed that Chelsea midfielder Jorginho ‘couldn’t cope’ with Tottenham counterpart Dele Alli during their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Spurs came away with a highly impressive 3-1 victory at Wembley as they inflicted Chelsea’s first defeat of the season in all competitions to climb above them into third in the table.

Star midfielder Alli was in scintillating form for Tottenham as he scored the opener to set them on their way, and Murphy has now highlighted his contribution while praising the club’s decision to not sign players for the sake of it in the summer.

In a column for the Daily Mail, Murphy said: “I don’t know who they could have signed last summer that would have helped them. Think about what other clubs went out and bought.

“Jorginho at Chelsea is a good player but he wouldn’t get in Tottenham’s team, and couldn’t cope with Dele Alli in their individual battle. Manchester United’s £50million signing Fred wouldn’t have strengthened Spurs.”

Jorginho cost the Blues £57million from Napoli in the summer.

OPINION

Murphy has chosen to highlight Alli’s contribution for Spurs here, and you can see why. The England international popped up everywhere for Spurs in a tireless performance punctuated by several moments of serious quality. This was Alli at his very best and Jorginho, as pointed out by Murphy, simply could not handle him. The Brazil-born Italy international looked well off the pace all game, and was taught a lesson by a rampant Spurs midfield. It was not just Jorginho who looked out of form though, with very few Chelsea players emerging with much credit. Their defence was all over the place, their midfield was completely overrun, and their attack looked bereft of ideas. This was a serious warning sign for Maurizio Sarri, who will have his work cut out this week to help his team recover from such a poor display. Tottenham on the other hand now have some serious momentum heading into their crucial Champions League clash against Inter Milan on Wednesday.
