Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that David de Gea is the “Best goalkeeper on the planet”.

Ferdinand delivered his praise in a Twitter message to de Gea, ahead of Man United’s mouth-watering clash with Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The two teams are first and second in their group and United will be desperate to come home with something from tonight’s game.

Ferdinand took time out to praise David de Gea today on his birthday, which coincidentally is the same as Ferdinand’s.

OPINION
Best on the planet? That’s some accolade for David de Gea. We’re not sure if he’s the very best but he’s up there, along with Ederson and Alisson. The great thing for English football is that all three are currently plying their trade in the Premier League. De Gea would love to get something from the game tonight in Italy – that would be the best birthday present that anyone could give him. If United are to get anything though, he’ll have to be at his very best. And we do think that when it comes to shot-stopping, no one else can touch him. There’s long been talk about him moving to Real Madrid but through every transfer window he’s stayed at United. The 28-year-old has made a staggering 329 appearances for United now and he must be the best and most consistent United player of the modern era. We’ll join Ferdinand in wishing him a happy birthday. And we’ll say he’s among the top three keepers on the planet.
