Manchester United will hold showdown talks with unsettled defender Eric Bailly this week in a bid to resolve his future, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 24-year-old, who has not started a game for the club since being substituted in the first half against Newcastle United at the beginning of October, will look to find out if he’ll be sold in January.

The Mirror reported in September that the defender was ready to quit the club, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur interested in him.

The Ivorian was the first player manager Jose Mourinho signed for United, but he has seemingly fallen out of favour with the Portuguese recently.

OPINION

Bailly’s time at United has been bizarre in the extreme. He’s alternated between looking like a world class centre half to being inexplicably ignored by Mourinho. He’s shown throughout his time in England that he is a good player, but for whatever reason Mourinho seems to have given up on him just two years after signing him. It will be interesting to see what comes out of this meeting because some clarity is desperately needed at Old Trafford for Bailly. The Ivorian is undoubtedly talented but he doesn’t appear to be in Mourinho’s plans any more. It seems like a bit of a knee-jerk reaction from the manager to a bad outing against Newcastle from Bailly, and you do wonder if the club would live to regret selling Bailly if he does indeed move to Arsenal or Tottenham. Victor Lindelof has looked good so far this campaign, but that doesn’t mean that Bailly needs to be shipped out. We’ll have to wait and see what comes from this meeting.
