Oleksandr Zinchenko’s return to the Manchester City starting XI can hardly be said to have turned sour after he played the full 90 minutes of a 2-2 draw away to a Lyon said that Pep Guardiola gushed about afterwards. Handed the left-back role in place of Fabian Delph, who had filled in for injured first choice Benjamin Mendy at the weekend, the 22-times Ukraine international did a reasonable job in testing circumstances against a fine side, especially given that his stated preference is to play in midfield. Many City fans were unsympathetic, slamming the 21-year-old during and after the match for his performance. The player who came close to joining Wolves over the summer for £16million was criticised for being “the worst player in the squad” and there were plenty calling for the club to cash in on him with the January window approaching. Given Mendy’s knee injury that has ruled him out until the new year, that might not be as certain as it once was, and the player and City fans are stuck with one another.
