A section of football fans took to Twitter to slam Toby Alderweireld for his display as Belgium were hammered 5-2 by Switzerland in the Nations League on Sunday night.
The Tottenham defender played the full 90 minutes of the clash in a defence that included Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany and Celtic star Dedryck Boyata as well as Thibaut Courtois in goal.
Many supporters were critical of the performance from Alderweireld, with comments including “finished” and “woeful”.

Alderweireld might wanted to have avoided social media last night, along with the rest of his Belgium teammates part of the country’s worst result and performance in years. How they went from 2-0 up and flying high to a 5-2 humiliation against a middling nation was barely believable and worrying, too. Bar a few standouts – notably Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen – it was a full-strength side and certainly good enough to overcome the Swiss and secure a place in the Nations League top four next summer. Alderweireld’s reputation has taken a bit of a hammering, although Spurs fans can at least contend themselves with the fact he was far better than Boyata and Kompany. The latter certainly looks a level or two below his outstanding best as the years and injuries start to catch up with him. Is this just a one-off horror show for Alderweireld, or an early sign that he might not be the player he was at is 2015 and 2016 peak?
