Turkish giants Fenerbahce are the latest team to join the race for Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, according to the Express.

The newspaper claims that Fabregas, who is on a reported £156,000-per-week at Stamford Bridge [Source: Spotrac], is set to be allowed to leave the Blues in January before his contract expires in the summer.

Italian outfit AC Milan are also said to be interested in the Spaniard, while Fenerbahce want the 31-year-old to help improve their middling league position.

The former Barcelona man has fallen down the pecking order under Maurizio Sarri this season, making just three Premier League appearances this term.

Good move for Chelsea?

A move away from the club seems to make sense for all parties, although you wonder whether Fenerbahce is the right club for Fabregas at this stage of his career. The Turkish side are having a woeful season and that’s probably not the best move for Fabregas at this moment in time. AC Milan would appear to be a much better move for the veteran midfielder. The Italian team are still inconsistent, but they look like they’re making strides forward and have a number of terrific players in place. For Chelsea either move works because they’ll likely be getting the same transfer fee either way – and, besides, any money is good for a player who could leave for free in a few months time.

Likely to happen?

If Fenerbahce make a move then there’s no reason that this switch shouldn’t happen, unless Fabregas turns down the move himself. AC Milan are also in the picture, of course, so we’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out.
