A number of West Brom fans have turned to Twitter to slaughter Ahmed Hegazi’s first half miss against Ipswich Town on Friday night – the Egyptian proving exactly why he is a centre back.

The Baggies travelled to Portman Road looking to keep up their hunt for a promotion place, having sunk rivals Leeds United with a hugely impressive win prior to the international break.

Darren Moore’s side did manage to take the lead against the side sitting bottom of the Championship courtesy of a goal from Jay Rodriguez, but really it could, and perhaps should, have been two after Hegazi’s poor miss.

A set piece pinballed about the Ipswich box and eventually fell the way of the centre back, who managed to volley the ball woefully wide – showing he has learned nothing despite having the likes of Dwight Gayle and Harvey Barnes come through the door over the summer.

It was a miss which had the Baggies faithful with their head in their hands on social media and when away games have been a banana skin for their side this season it is easy to understand why.

Taking a commanding lead would have made things so much more comfortable at half time but instead the supporters will have been left sweating over what the second half had in store, with Ipswich by no means dead and buried.

If they have learned one thing in the opening 45 minutes, it is that Hegazi is best sticking to what he knows and using – both proverbially and physically – his head.
