The exit of Kemar Roofe from Leeds United could be one of the five biggest January transfers in the Championship, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The regional newspaper claim that a deal taking the 25-year-old attacker from Elland Road is among five of the most expensive deals that could go through in the forthcoming winter window.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report Blackburn Rovers playmaker Bradley Dack, Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman, Middlesbrough ace Martin Braithwaite and Alaves winger Ibai Gomez are the other four potential standout deals involving clubs in England’s second tier.

OPINION

There would be uproar at Elland Road if Leeds cashed in on their top goalscorer just when they were in sight of promotion back to the Premier League. Roofe has scored 21 goals in his last 45 matches, including seven this season despite missing six weeks due to injury, and has emerged as one of the best players in Marcelo Bielsa’s new-look United. Leeds are vulnerable to losing Roofe as he will enter the final 18 months of his contract in January and reports this week claimed the club have yet to offer him an extended deal. Should the 25-year-old score prolifically between now and the opening of the January window, then Leeds could be hit with a number of bids for one of their prize assets. They should knock them all back, as no club are likely to offer more than £10million for a player whose value will diminish the longer he fails to sign an extension. Leeds need Roofe and can live without the cash injection. Promotion is worth far more than that.
