Aston Villa fans put back-to-back defeats behind them and claimed all three points against Bolton at Villa Park, and fans were thrilled with the performance of summer signing John McGinn.
The 2-0 scoreline makes it look fairly perfunctory but it was far from that as Villa struggled to assert their dominance in front of goal.
Bolton had some good chances to hurt Villa but didn’t get the run of the ball in their opponent’s box.
However, Dean Smith’s men deserved the points and goals from Jack Grealish and James Chester put a smile on the faces of the fans at Villa Park on a cold Friday night in the midlands.
And they were positively beaming about John McGinn.
COMMENTARY
Celtic wanted him over the summer but Aston Villa ended up signing McGinn for just under £2.7million and there were many Villans saying that he was one of the signings of the summer and the best player at the club. One fans said he was hands down the best player “no ifs and no buts” and when you’ve got Jack Grealish in your side that’s some praise. McGinn was everywhere tonight and possibly the biggest compliment is that Bolton spent all night trying to foul him out of the game. As one fan said, his engine is incredible and he’s exactly the sort of player that Villa need in the middle of their side. Dominant, confident, aggressive, vision… just some words that were thrown towards McGinn tonight from Villa fans. He’s played 14 games for Villa in the Championship tonight and it looks like he’ll be a fixture in Dean Smith’s side and a fan favourite for the rest of the season.
Here are the best reactions to the 24-year-old midfielder:
Jonn McGinn has gotta be one of the signings of the summer, how we’ve got him for £2 million is beyond me?????

Entertaining first half. I’m just anxious that we’ll relax as usual 2nd half and allow Bolton in. Need to keep up momentum and dominate!
Abraham, McGinn, Jack excellent first half. That Chester clearance! ????? #AVFC— Alex Franklin (@AFranklin_AVFC) November 2, 2018
McGinn is a bulldog and also a wizard. Kodjia is on the verge of absolutely nutting someone. He is gonna have a 2 or 3 goal game soon.

So then, what did we learn from that 45? McGinn is great, Nyland isn’t #NewKeeperNeeded #AVFC #utv

We will improve no end when we have full backs who can bring the ball out and have an end product. Hutton is great at the first bit but cant pass or cross for toffee.
John McGinn is a phenom. Best player at the club no ifs ands or buts. #avfc

First half #AVFC v #BWFC thoughts:
– Nyland is on borrowed time
– Adomah/Kodjia worst positional sense in all of football history
– Jack dominant & confident
– Bolton always fall for a drop of the shoulder
– Taylor continues to be hopeless
– McGinn everywhere and relentless— Adam Gilks (@SgtGilko) November 2, 2018
Grealish and McGinn are different gravy. #AVFC

John McGinn, what a bloke. By far my favourite player at the minute. Work rate, passion, aggression, vision and a sweet left foot. Baller.

Probably doing a few former players a disservice here, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Villa player with a better engine than McGinn. He’s everywhere.

McGinn is the best player we’ve had for a long time. #avfc #utv
