West Ham midfielder Josh Cullen has been hit with a serious injury blow while on loan with Charlton after dislocating his shoulder while playing against Walsall on Tuesday night.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has confirmed via his club’s official website that Cullen, 22, has been injured while on loan from the Hammers, but amazingly, he was not the only player to dislocate his shoulder in the League One clash as Igor Vetokele also had the same injury.

“He’s (Vetokele) dislocated his shoulder, he’s gone to hospital. Josh Cullen dislocated his shoulder, it’s just unreal. Saturday we got two hamstrings (Ben Reeves and Anfernee Dijksteel), today we get two dislocated shoulders, it’s just not normal,” said Bowyer.

Cullen has made 11 appearances in League One since joining Charlton on a season-long loan in the summer.

OPINION

Cullen has been making solid progress over the last couple of seasons and even looked impressive in West Ham’s pre-season, but this is a big blow for him as he could be sidelined for several weeks with this dislocated shoulder. The 5ft 9 (transfermarkt) midfielder is someone who is highly-rated by the Hammers fans and those at the London club, but if he is not playing in League One because of injury then it is unlikely that he is going to be playing in the Premier League for his parent club in the future, especially as he is 22-years-old. Charlton have been in decent form while Cullen has been on the pitch. He has only lost three times in his 11 league appearances as the Addicks sit sixth in the third-tier table. It will be a blow for Bowyer to be without Cullen and Vetokele in what was definitely an astonishing turn of events at the Banks’s Stadium on Tuesday night.
