Swansea City attacker Oliver McBurnie had a nightmare showing for Scotland as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Portugal on Sunday.

The 22-year-old forward played only 76 minutes of his nation’s latest friendly match but that was plenty of time to prove himself to not be good enough to play on the international stage.

Nothing went right for McBurnie from start to finish as he looked lazy in possession and seemed to be short of ideas on how to get the better of Portugal’s defence.

The Swans attacker looked like a player with a limited range due to his latest outing and he doesn’t want a reputation like that.

Alex McLeish did kind of throw McBurnie into the deep end by having him being his side’s main attacking threat against a nation as formidable as Portugal but many won’t take that into account.

The 22-year-old has shown that he has a very bright future at the Swans as he has shown signs of being a player capable of being a threat in the Championship.

McBurnie has featured 12 times in the league this season, scoring four goals, while registering two, and has helped his team’s cause.

Given that the 22-year-old is clearly better than his latest showing for Scotland suggested he was, McBurnie upon returning to Swansea must prove a point by putting in a tremendous display which he is capable of.

If he does that then loads of people will forget about his nightmare showing and his promising development can stay on track.
