Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath has delivered his verdict on his former club’s 1-0 win over Swansea on Saturday.

Dean Smith registered his first win in charge of Villa, with on-loan Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham proving the difference between the two sides at Villa Park with a goal that was his fourth in seven games.

McGrath reacted to the victory via his personal Twitter account, remarking on how “proud” he was of Aston Villa following the win whilst urging the team to move “onwards and upwards”.

He said: “So proud of Aston Villa FC. Dean Smith and JT. Staff Supporters everyone who believes we’re worth more than this, no disrespect to anyone but let’s move onwards and upwards.”

OPINION

Aston Villa would have no doubt had their morale boosted by the fact that Dean Smith registered his first win in charge of the club. They were the better side and Abraham was unlucky not to have put more past the Swans. Villa needed a serious confidence boost following the sacking of Steve Bruce, and they may just have found it with this victory. McGrath is right to heap praise on the club, as they were by far the better team on Saturday. He is right to be “proud” of them – before Bruce was sacked, all they received was criticism left, right and centre, so they needed some praise heaped on them. Hopefully this result will now spark an excellent run of games – after all, nobody got promoted by being inconsistent. With a new manager on board, they are more than capable of doing that – and as McGrath said, “let’s move onwards and upwards”.
