Patrice Evra has returned to West Ham for training in the last few days, however the left-back will not be re-signed by the club who released him earlier this year, according to football.london.

The news outlet claims that Evra, 37, is simply building up his fitness with the Hammers in a bid to earn himself a contract elsewhere as he remains a free agent since his deal at the London Stadium expired.

It is understood that the former Manchester United and France left-back played in a behind-closed-doors friendly defeat to QPR on Thursday, but he will not be re-joining West Ham on a permanent basis.

OPINION

That is a relief for West Ham fans. Evra was one of the worst players at the club last season as he only made five league appearances since David Moyes handed him a short-term deal in February. In each of his three starts, the Irons lost 4-1 on every occasion and it was clearly the correct decision to let him go once the season had ended. It is a surprise that Evra is still without a club but the 37-year-old is probably aiming too high for himself right now, as he may struggle to get into most Championship teams in England. Moving to somewhere like the MLS, China or the Middle East could be a better idea for the ex-France international, who would surely help raise the profile of a club with more money than sense. It would be a huge shock to see him return to playing in a major European league, especially in England.
